So finally after procrastinating our luncheon over many weekends Nimisha and I made it to Cafe Brittania today. And Boy! It was worth the wait. We were pleasantly surprised just as we stepped down the cab in Ballard Estate in Colaba. Old English architecture, arch-windows …...the real Mumbai. As soon as we located Cafe Brittania(Not too difficult to find by the way), we were greeted inside by this nice old gentleman at the counter. The expression on his face exuded so much warmth ,we felt we were right at home and were certain of completely pleasant and “feel good” experience here.
Service was prompt to the core added by the fact we had some heads on tips on what to order by friends who had absolutely enjoyable experience here. We had our plates filled in less then a minute I suppose even after the restraunt being almost full to capacity.
So it was Sali Boti(Minced Mutton with a tangy gravy and garnised with potatoes crisps) best had with tinge of lemon juice , chapati(the softest that I have ever laid my hands on), Chicken Berry Pulao which seemed quite average apart from the addition of red berries which gave it a sweet taste. I personally believe if your not open to try out a mix of flavours in you pulao,go for the Chicken or Mutton Biryani.
Finally the desert, caramel custard- not the best I have had but satisfying nonetheless. Even though we were full till the throat we would have liked for the portion to be larger.
My personal favourite the Sali Boti which easily left us wanting for more. The right mixture of gravy and meat which goes well both with rice and the chapati.
The high point of this entire experience is when the probable owner of this place , 90 year old gentleman who enthusiastically visits every table and personally takes orders. If your lucky he will even perform a small jingle for you suggesting you to take a particular drink or dish. The table beside us were the lucky ones, when he burst out into a jingle “Fresh Lime soda salty or sweet, to beat the Bombay heat”. Every table was left smiling after their “happy” encounter with him. We were so impressed with him that we just had to take a pic of him to remind us of the good time we had here....and will definitly have more!
